How To Be Of Service (In All That You Do)
In my very early 20s, I had an epiphany. I realized that helping people was very important to me. I realized that I wanted to really make a difference in the world, and I wanted to do it through my career. So, I set out to discover a career that involved helping people.
In my mind, there was a limited scope of careers that fit the mold of what it meant to "help". I thought I needed to become a healer, body worker, or medical professional of some sort, so I shifted ALL my focus out of the job I was in (at the time, I was working as an analyst at a healthcare consulting firm), and I started searching for a career of service. I spent countless hours searching, and I spent countless hours being resentful of the job I had, and anxious that I was not where I was supposed to be. I WAS WRONG.
What I did not realize, is that by simply deciding that I wanted to help people, and deciding to make a difference in the world, was enough to make it so. Simply realizing that I was a vessel of service to the world, made me a vessel of service to the world, exactly where I was, and in all that I did.
Service-oriented work is not strictly connected to any specific job title or career path; service-oriented work is an intention.
If the intention behind your work is to be of service to everyone you encounter, then you're helping in a very big way. If the intention behind your work is to be of service to everyone you encounter, then you're helping in every single moment, and in everything that you do.
The truth of the matter is, we are all learning and growing, and we are all here to help. You help those around you by simply knowing your value, being a kind communicator, and leading in an inspirational way. You heal those around you by having an open heart, and infusing all your words, actions, and spreadsheets with your love and your spirit. Yes, there are many different platforms and industries to explore, and yes, it is very important that each one of us finds a career that is in total alignment with our soul purpose and path. But, in every step of the journey, we are exactly where we need to be. There are limitless ways to be of service, and there is absolutely no wasted time.
